Brant Point Lighthouse – Nantucket

I’ve spent a lot of mornings and late afternoons at Brant Point on Nantucket. I’ve seen the little lighthouse there in a lot of different lighting and atmospheric conditions. As busy as Nantucket can get, you can always find time to be alone at your favorite locations. You may have to get up a little early like I did for this shot, but you’ll usually be treated to something special. This is an HDR treatment of one of my favorite photos that I captured there. Just one early Autumn morning at sunrise. The sunlight and the clouds were amazing.

Quidnet in the Morning – Nantucket

Quidnet in the Morning is a photograph from my Coastal New England Series – Nantucket. Quidnet is a tiny seaside Hamlet on Nantucket Island. It sits on a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Sesachacha Pond. I was driving along the coast one morning photographing some of my favorite areas. When I came to Sesachacha Pond the sky was a beautiful lavender color that was reflecting nicely off the mirror-like surface of the pond.

Sciasconset Morning – Nantucket

Sciasconset Morning is a photograph from my Coastal New England Series – Nantucket. I woke one morning and headed out to ‘Sconset to capture some images of Sankaty Lighthouse. I arrived a little early so I took a walk along the beach. The colors that morning as the sun was about to rise were amazing and I took several photos. I had forgotten to bring my tripod along the beach with me so I had to hold my camera as steady as possible which was nearly impossible. Fortunately, the photographic effect worked well. Of all the shots of the sunrise that morning in Sciasconset this is my favorite. I like the dreamy quality that the slight camera movement offered. Looking at this photo today, I can hear the ocean and feel the chill that was in the air on that morning. It’s kind of strange, but I’ve spent more time in Sciasconset before sunrise than any other time of the day. Some day I’m going to have to shoot there during daylight hours!

Stone, Stones – Martha’s Vineyard

Stone, Stones is a photograph from my Coastal New England Series – Martha’s Vineyard. I began my work on Martha’s Vineyard in May of 2008. My best efforts were thwarted by horrible weather. I was staying in Edgartown and it rained most of the time I was there. During breaks in the rain, I would head out and shoot what I could. While walking in downtown Edgartown one afternoon I noticed an old slate sidewalk that was adjacent to a river stones walkway. I liked the contrast so I took a number of photos. Stone, Stones is my favorite.

Brant Point Solitude – Nantucket

Brant Point Solitude-Nantucket is a photograph from my Coastal New England Series – Nantucket. I remember the morning I took this photograph. It was very early and promised to be a nice day. I made my way towards Brant Point driving past the White Elephant Hotel and then some new home construction. As I approached the entry to Brant Point I parked by the Coast Guard station. I grabbed my camera bag and walked toward the point. The ground was still damp with dew and I could see droplets on the surrounding fences as I started onto the sand and slipped off my sandals. As I stood up, I checked the horizon to the East to gage how long it would be before the sun rose. The sky was violet and golden. I thought for a moment on what I planned to shoot. Perhaps the wharves across the harbor, some of the rosa rugosa bushes and the lighthouse.

As I looked at the lighthouse I could make out a figure on the walkway also looking toward the East. I’ve been on Brant point many times at this time of day and I realize what a special kind of solitude one can find there. Not wanting to intrude on their privacy, I decided to hold off a bit before making my way to the beach and the lighthouse and instead shot a few photos from just a few steps from the entrance. I then realized that I had forgotten my tripod in the car and walked back to retrieve it. As I was returning from the truck, a young woman on a bicycle rode toward me coming from the point. She was beaming with joy as she pedaled her bicycle and smiled ear to ear and said “good morning” as she passed me. Real joy, you know?

When I returned to the point, the figure at the lighthouse was gone and the bike trail and foot prints in the sand from the light to the entrance let me know that the girl on the bike was the person I had seen earlier. I shot for about an hour along the point and I was able to get a number of good shots. Several which have and will appear on this blog, but my favorite one from that morning is this shot. Just knowing that the person in this shot was experiencing such joy is a good thing for me. It puts me back on the point at that morning, it puts me in contact with that girl’s joy again. That’s something.

Quidnet Across Sesechacha – Nantucket

Quidnet Across Sesachacha – Nantucket is a photograph from my Coastal New England Series – Nantucket. There is always something beautiful going on somewhere on Nantucket. I’ve seen some incredible sunrises on Nantucket. I think it is Nantucket’s low geography that makes for such beautiful sunrises and sunsets. You’re never really in the shadow of anything substantial. There are no mountains and even in town there are no tall buildings save for a church steeple or two. I remember taking this photo in particular because some friends from New Zealand had come to join us on Nantucket. Margaret (the wife) had mentioned that she may want to join me on one of my early morning forays around Sankaty. I told her what time I would be leaving and she said she would try to join me.

On that morning, I woke around 5 AM and got my gear together. I stepped outside and it was cold and misty. Not usually the greatest conditions for landscape photography, but those conditions can change quickly on Nantucket. I finished loading the van and stepped back inside to kiss my wife goodbye. I stepped in the van, and popped the lights on. I put the van in reverse looked, over my right shoulder and slowly backed up in an arc to make it out of the drive. It was quiet, “foggy-quiet”, if you know what I mean. I could hear the gravel popping under the van’s wheels as I carefully backed up, being sure not to hit the fence. I put the van into drive and began to move forward when the van’s lights illuminated a startling apparition.

There, before me, in the early morning mist stood a tall pale figure of a man. He seemed completely naked, except for a pair of very small out-of-style men’s bikini briefs. His arms were stretched high over his head and he waved them slowly over his head. He glowed eerily white in the headlights and it kind of spooked me and I thought I was looking at a ghost as he slowly walked toward the van. It was Lloyd, Margaret’s husband. He had come outside dressed in his game day uniform to ask me to please wait for his tardy wife as she was getting ready to come shooting with me. That’s a dedicated husband, (and a frightful thing to see first thing in the morning before a coffee)!

Margaret and I headed out to Sankaty across the moors and while we were thwarted by the fog in some areas, we were rewarded by it as we arrived at Sesachacha Pond. We got out of the van and shot for a little while. I remember the greens and amber colors being especially vivid that morning. I was waiting for the fog to lift to actually get a shot of Quidnet across the pond before the sun had fully risen, but that wasn’t going to happen that morning. We were still rewarded with some great photo opportunities and the shot above is one of them.

There is always something beautiful going on somewhere on Nantucket.

Seashell No. 3 – Gifts of the Sea

Seashell No. 3 is a photograph from my art photography series Gifts from the Sea. Today, I’ll take a break from New England, Nantucket and the Azores and offer a photograph of an on-going series I have been working on. Seashell No.3 is one of a number of black and white images I have made of a variety of sea shells.

It all began one evening when I was looking at a few shells I had on a shelf in my den. I liked the way the light played off of them. I noticed that in some light the shells took on qualities that weren’t shell-like at all. I started a black and white photo series of seashells to try and show that. Sometimes the shells seem soft and cottony, other times they looks like living tissue, some even seem to be moving. I really like exploring them in this fashion which is why I continue to add to the series on occasion.

Inhames – Furnas, Sao Miguel, Azores – Portugal

Inhames – Furnas, Sao Miguel, Azores-Portugal is a photograph from my Sao Miguel, Azores Series. Inhames (ehn-yomsh) is the Portuguese word from which the English word “yams” is derived from. Which is handy because inhames are in fact a type of yam. While driving around Sao Miguel in the Azores we spent several different days in the town of Furnas, a geothermal hot-spot located near the center of Sao Miquel. Furnas has geysers, hot springs, mud baths and the other volcanic aspects of similar places. It was always interesting to walk around Furnas and see steam just pouring from manhole covers, sewer openings or stone walls.

I was walking along a stream that was fed by a variety of different hot springs that we were taking moments to immerse ourselves in. One was shadowed by a shallow cave and full of a sulfurous mud that was said to have a therapeutic effect. Adjacent to the stream and caves was a grove of wild inhames. Inhames grow all over Sao Miguel, but this grove because of its proximity to the stream and minerals in the water was particularly healthy. The leaves were extra large and velvety and I liked the way the stream divided the grove in the resulting photo. Inhames themselves are a little bland, but like potatoes you can dress them up fine!

Brant Point Lanthorn – Nantucket

Brant Point Lanthorn – Nantucket is a photograph from my Coastal New England Series – Nantucket. I’m an early riser and when I’m in Nantucket I like to get walk downtown to Jetties Beach and often Brant Point. As any early riser will tell you, there are rewards in these meanders. Moments of solace and peace, crisp cool air and often the most spectacular views of the day. Nantucket has amazing light. Perhaps because it is an island and has a low geographical profile, perhaps it is just the atmosphere that surrounds that part of the Atlantic Ocean, I don’t know. I just know that Nantucket has amazing light.

The morning I took this photo, I had been to several favorite areas. The sun was just coming over the horizon and was gilding everything on the island with brilliant golden light. As I approached Brant Point Lighthouse I noticed that the sunlight had filled the lanthorn and the red lamp lens and they were glowing brightly in contrast to the rest of the lighthouse and the sky beyond. I quickly switched lenses and started firing away. The effect only lasted for a minute or so, but I managed to get the shot I was looking for.

Three Trees, Nantucket Moors – Nantucket

Three Trees, Nantucket Moors – Nantucket is a photograph from my Coastal New England Series – Nantucket. One third of America’s heathlands (moors) are located on Nantucket Island. The Nantucket moors are an interesting place. At times they can look like their English counterparts blanketed by fogs and mist, in the winter they can seem like the Alaskan Tundra, in the Autumn they always seem to look a bit like the Serengeti. Some Nantucket folks have even fostered that effect by raising life-sized plywood silhouettes of African plains animals in the distance. The unsuspecting tourist can be caught off guard when driving along the road or riding their bike along one of the islands bike paths and seeing a rhinoceros or elephant in the distance! The effect is very believable.

One morning after taking photos along Sciasconset and Sankaty I was heading back to town and pulled over to take a look around the moors to scout for subject matter. There were a few trees in the distance and they caught my eye. It was a combination of the trees’ positions, the late Autumn colors and the interesting light that day and I took several photos. The one above was my favorite. It’s not a very “Nantucket” photo as most of my work on the island goes, but I really like it and I get good comments on it at shows. For a tiny little island, Nantucket has a lot to offer the photographer. If you’re ever there, don’t overlook the Nantucket Moors!
